Unscrew America

Hey everyone, a big website that I've been working on for a while just went live. It's for a nonprofit organization founded by Lesley Chilcott, one of the producers of An Inconvenient Truth. The basic idea is to get people to start switching from incandescent lightbulbs to CFLs and LEDs. But the site is pretty fun.

Visit it here.

Also check out a you tube video for the project here.

Okay, I am seriously vexed that the CFL's have Mercury in them, so you can't just throw them in the trash. C'mon people, we took the Mercury out of thermometers why did we put them in our light bulbs. Fortunately we have just started to switch to the CFL's so we have a few years before we have to worry about disposing of them.

Yeah, mercury is bad. That's part of what our site is about, getting people to use CFLs responsibly. You can recycle them at IKEA and some Home Depots, and our site is trying to get people to make the need for recycling them known to local governments so they'll be more options out there. And, as far as I understand, the amount of Mercury in the bulbs is less than the point of a pin. And using incandescents burns more energy, which expends more coal, which outputs more mercury in the environment. So, CFLs are still better. LEDs are the best and will be the future of lighting where they're available.

Whew, I know way too much about lightbulbs now.
